Why exhausted founders need to act fast

When you're feeling exhausted, it's time to take action. Burnout doesn't go away on its own and you need to reverse it before it's too late. You must actively create a plan that will allow you and your organisation to recover from burnout while minimizing the impact on current employees or customers.

If you don't address your burnout at the first sign, you could inadvertently cause great employees to quit, or even cause your company's revenue to plummet and be forced to lay off. As a founder, you are the leader of your company and your energy matters to ensure that all members of your team move forward together.

Burnout prevention is of course the best approach. One of the most important factors in helping an entrepreneur avoid burnout is having a good support system around them, whether it's friends and family outside of work or an advisory board of other professionals who know what they're going through. Instead, it's important to give employees time off to take care of themselves or offer mental health days. Taking regular breaks during stressful times is one way to prevent burnout. Give them the opportunity to spend more time with their family and to do activities they enjoy.

Employees also need a platform where they can voice their concerns about what is going on around them and how the company intends to handle things, if any. This can be done through internal discussions or meetings, whichever works best! Organizations are also advised to create some sort of crisis management plan in advance, which will set out who will do what in each department if employees are absent for an extended period of time.

 

How founders can bestow grace on themselves

As a founder you have to “first put on the oxygen mask before you help others”. This may go against your nature as you often look after all your team members while making sure clients are a priority. But if you're not able to rest and take care of yourself before exhaustion gets out of control, there's no one to run the business.

  • Eat a healthy diet, exercise and get enough sleep. Take a break from your work, even if it's just an hour or two a day. Use this time to do something relaxing that you enjoy.
